Two Nursing Home Owners were fined after an elderly resident died when falling from a hoist. She was being carried in a sling from her bed to a chair that was specially adapted for her.
However, the investigation after the accident found this hoist to be in an unsafe condition. The stitching was worn and the accident was one that could have happened at any time the hoist was being used. Moreover the training and supervision of the staff was inadequate as were their safety procedures.
As a result she fell from the hoist and hit her head on the floor and died the next day.The owners were fined £50,000 and ordered to pay £20,000 costs.
