Accidents carrying passengers on farm trailers

Accidents carrying passengers on farm trailers

The HSE investigated 3 deaths and 31 serious injuries between 1986 and 1999 that were a direct result of carrying passengers on farm trailers.

Whilst it is legal to carry passengers, even children, on farm trailers there are clearly risks associated and there are specific considerations and conditions that must be observed.

The HSE have published a leaflet which both gives detailed guidance and also lists the legal requirements. You can download “Carrying passengers on Farm Trailers” here

It also makes the important point that whilst it is legal to carry passengers on private land it may well be an offence to do so on the public highway and that road traffic legislation extends to any areas to which the public have access such a farm drive with a public footpath.
